Firewalls are no panacea for cybersecurity

Network firewalls do not make organisations safe against every form attack. Vehicular firewalls, their namesake, act to prevent heat, fumes and fire from moving between the engine bay of a car and the cabin, whilst still allowing important control mechanisms to function. Similarly, network firewalls prevent certain types of nefarious activity from occurring, whilst allowing legitimate business activities to continue.

Neither, though, is a panacea. The humans in both situations can render a firewall useless in protecting both a vehicle and a business. Many risks exist either entirely outside, or even inside, an organisation, meaning that the firewall, designed to sit between these two worlds, can end up watching the environment collapse around it whilst having no ability to intervene whatsoever.

Are you relying on your firewall as your sole cybersecurity protection in your business? It's time for a more strategic approach to resiliency and protection. The weakest link is always us – humans. So how will you improve your cybersecurity posture today?
